The data-driven project manager

Vanhoucke

A statistical battle against project obstacles

Course Summary

Data-driven project management is known in the academic literature as “dynamic scheduling” or “integrated project management and control.” It is a project management methodology to plan, monitor, and control projects in progress in order to deliver them on time and within budget to the client. Its main focus is on the integration of three crucial aspects (baseline scheduling, risk analysis and project control) into an integrated decision-support framework.

This 1-day workshop gives an overview of the book’s main themes to discover solutions to common obstacles faced by project managers. Written as a business novel, the book is highly interactive, allowing readers to participate and consider options at each stage of a project. And so will be the workshop.

The workshop will focus on a case study about the development of a drone for nature conservation and will rely on planning and data analysis techniques from Project Management to analyze risk. Such a schedule risk analysis is key to the success of a project, and relies on data and data-driven techniques. In the workshop, an overview of such schedule risk analysis and project control methodologies will be given using a mix of lectures and case studies.

Moreover, a future look to the use of data for monitoring and controlling projects will be given. Based on years of research and case investigations, and using real case studies and active-learning processes, the 1 day workshop will introduce you to an integrated planning, risk and control methodology using simple as well as advanced control methodologies using big data and Monte-Carlo simulation tools, with references to sources in literature and empirical project databases.

The workshop is based on years of experience, both through the lecturer’s research projects as well as his teaching lectures at business schools in Belgium and the UK. The lecturer will help you to understand key management practices, risk analysis concepts, enablers and techniques to improve your project monitoring processes. You will understand how the various planning and control concepts are integrated and combined to boost your project performance and ability to timely take corrective actions.
